Yes, you need the explorer card. Each card has its own benefits -- Upgrades on award tickets is a benefit for the Explorer card. I don't believe that other cards have this (other than the UA Club Card). My guess is that until you're in the system as having an Explorer Card, you're out of luck.

I should say that I haven't tried my luck with this -- hopefully it actually registers in the system, but given I still get Boarding Group 5 every now and then, I wouldn't hold my breath .
