Well at least that would clear the return portion then. If cabotage truly applies in this case I wonder why I have gotten away with it on so many occasions in the past, and why I can currently find revenue tickets being sold LAX-NRT-GUM (single fare basis!) on AA/JL metal (my first point in post #3).
