You won't have any trouble getting a gate pass in a situation like that. Visit the "additional services" desk at IAH...I got a gate pass there myself a few weeks ago with a friend who left his phone in the Club the night before.
But as far as destinations..it makes little difference if you're using a credit card.. pick something that leaves a little bit later than his flight.. AUS or DFW come to mind and are likely to only be a few hundred bucks..MSY, ATL are other possibilities.
