Living in the city is too much demanding and you can't find any place truly cheap. I think its better to stay in hoboken new jersey instead of living in the city if you have to stay for a short period as its way cheaper than the city and you can take the train to the city and its less than 30min train ride, depending on where u want to go. I saw mostly students do this to go to college.
