I've done this a few times. One was for 3 nights. And no....you don't have to check out either.

I walk in, hand over credit card, turn around and leave and wait for stay to post. Going to your room for anything is just a waste of time and serves no purpose. No one cares whether you stay in your room or not.

Occasionally hotels will "check you out" if they think you have left, if only to save you money. Bad news on a mattress run.
