It isn't quite to the level of "any seats available" but more often than not, it does happen that way. I'm not sure what the exact cutoff is but it happens a lot.

For a good example look at LGA-IAH for the rest of this afternoon versus tomorrow. You should see today basically wide open while for tomorrow's flights there are still a bunch of buckets closed off. Those will open up through the day tomorrow, assuming the flights don't sell out.
