Am hoping for some advice.

A few weeks ago booked a return Avios ticket in WTP for myself and the other half. (one return booking for two and not two one ways).

Today I saw reward availability for First on the outbound leg for both of us and thought it would be a nice treat to splurge (I don't have enough miles for a fully miles ticket but enough for a miles + cash booking).

My dilemma is if I try to upgrade the outbound (via phone as impossible to do online) will I potentially lose my return leg? The reason is that I believe the current redemption ticket will need to be cancelled and rebooked?

At the moment there is no availability showing on the return leg and I know that cancelling the redemption is no guarantee that it will appear again.

Or does it not matter when contacting BA as they will do the change seamlessly through their computers?

Anyone faced this situation in the past and have advice?
