I was thinking more along the lines of "I'm going to be gone all day and just need a place to sleep" mentality. Which the Hampton Inn fits perfectly: comfy bed, free breakfast, next to the freeway.

I would second renting a car, Palm Springs is a lot more spread out than people realize.
