Foreign transactions qualify for category bonuses like 5% cashback.

I had read somewhere on this forum that foreign transactions would only receive 1% no matter what. I even received a SM confirmation that this was true. Despite this, my current statement only has transactions made in China and it clearly received 5% cash back. YMMV

Discover takes creditworthiness seriously.

I figured I'd apply for the Discover Miles card and get the 12,000 miles sign-up bonus. Just called the approval line and they gave me three options. #1 Close my $16k existing card and approve $3k Miles card. #2 Reduce existing card to $500 credit and approve $3k Miles card. #3 Deny the application. Supposedly they say I can only be approved for $3k now.

I have gotten so used to Chase moving credit around between cards, and pretty much accepting any plausible story as to why I'm applying for so many cards. ^

BTW, I took option #3.
