Not necessary. Anyone can go to the "Reservations" menu on AA.com > View Available Seats. Choose your flight number and date, and that will show you the available seats, available preferred seats, and unavailable seats. It does not show seats blocked for airport assignment, though a paid service like ExpertFlyer does.
