this will depend on the circumstance.
You may be able to make seat assignments at anytime -- so checking frequently might work out.
You may be able to select seat at online check-in -- 24 hours prior to the first flight.
You can check again arriving at the first airport.
Any if these might work or might not.
If none do, then you with need to handle it at the departure gate.
