Similarly, if an evacuation is required you don't want laptops, iPads, etc getting in the way.
I think BA will allow you to have such items stowed in the seat back pocket, other airlines (e.g. Finnair) won't even allow that (you have to put it in the overhead locker on in a bag under the seat in front).
