Is PPT valid routing for AKL-LAX or AKL-XXX? I think that would be the issue.
I've also considered this, and it's tricky. I'm not at my computer but it might be possible to do ICN-PPT via AKL (with stopover in AKL). Then do PPT-XXX for the return. You'd need to get to ICN first, but if you have UA or AA miles, you could look for a one way award.
