They're electronic when you can see them online. Those are good only on United flights (for trans oceanic flights they're only good on W fares or higher)..they can be used for an entire one way journey on United even if it has multiple flights.
If you are going to fly on Lufthansa you must call United and request that they convert your GPU's to paper..they will send them to you. The paper upgrades are good on Lufthansa flights for same day space available upgrades at the airport.. and only on V fares or higher. On Lufthansa, a GPU can only be used for one segment at a time. If your upgrade doesn't clear you can return the paper GPU to United and they'll redeposit in your account.
The upgrades don't work on any other carrier.
