If that's a yes, then I'd not go at 5 pm.
However, you also have to consider:
1. Checked luggage - they may try to follow the rules of the original departure time. Are they willing to carry-on, if they have to?
2. Security - Will they be able to clear security at 12:00 am? Or will the
place be shut down? This also applies to item 1, if they do wish to check baggage.

well you are making 1 Big assumption and that is that there will be UA reps (or rent a crew whatever is used) manning the CheckIncounter/s till the new flight time I find in most nonHubs that wont be the case so if a person can do and does OLCI and have no bags to be checked in they could get away with arriving later. Otherwise if they arrive later they may just find they went to the airport for nothing and now have to hope and pray theres room on the next flight out
