Before they used to put luggage in containers it really did used to be very common for cases to arrive soaked through. I remember sitting on a plane at CDG and seeing luggage sitting out on the apron for ages in the pouring rain....even seen some falling off and landing in puddles.

My wife wraps everything in plastic bags....I sometimes think a quarter of our weight allowance is taken up with plastic bags.
