I would say we usually end up just waiting with the highest number person, but do others think it is ok to for the lowest number person to save one seat? How about 2 seats? I assume it is not okay for one person to pay for EBCI and then save seats.
No rules except socially acceptable standards.
Most here will say saving a single middle seat near the rear of the aircraft will generate no scorn. Move close to the front, save more than one or try it in an exit or bulkhead row, and you will have violated some social norms to which many more will object.
Bringing construction barrier tape, marking off a section of seats and standing scornfully at the perimeter with your arms crossed will always be out of bounds.
