Technically the CX 889 that you got book on is still consider a direct flight but only one stop. (a brief stop at YVR, change crew and new passenger on board, then fly again)
With CX adjusting the capacity it may be unavoidable, and CX has OK record in releasing addditional availability 6 months / 1 week out.
