Sorry, I should have edited my text--we were upgraded SEA-EWR and were waitlisted for EWR-BOM. No one explained the 24 hr cutoff so we assumed we were still 'in lline' on the waitlist. Arriving EWR about 6 hrs before the BOM fllight, I asked at a CS counter about this, and after a phone call, the CSR got us BACK on a waitlist. Then we sweated it out at the gate. We were using a miles + dollars upgrade. Since you are asking about westbound, I hope you can check in on line @ -24 hrs and proceed to the airport. If you have not flown from BOM before, I will suggest that you do get there 3 hrs in advance--and since that means driving through the evening rush hour, I would say don't leave South Bombay (old city center) later than 5:30.
