this on a flight leaving the U.S. and even tho it appears that the weapons were in checked luggage, you would think that someone would have noticed it as it was screened

Not sure if it was really missed (but, it wouldn't surprise me if it had been) as the "haul" was a number of bladed weapons. All of which is perfectly fine to clear security in checked baggage in the US. It just so happens that they are illegal to be imported into Northern Ireland where they were (rightfully) discovered - presuming that was the final desination.
On the other hand, to show my cynacism, I'm surprised the weapons completed their trip and weren't "voluntarily surrendered" to a TSA employee unknowningly by the passenger at the airport of origin in the US.
