Changes after the first segment is flown -- to allow a stopover -- are generally okay, but could easily trigger a HIP (higher intermediate point) reprice depending on the specific rules of your ticket. Take for example, the two folliwng rules that may or may not exist in some of our tickets:
- THE HIGHER INTERMEDIATE POINT RULE DOES NOT APPLY FOR STOPOVERS.
- NO HIP OR MILEAGE EXCEPTIONS APPLY.
In the case of the first rule, the number of stopovers is dependent on the rest of the fare rules and there is no change in price so changes to add/remove stopovers should be fine. In the case of the second, you are likely liable for payment of an extra fare if breaking the fare in your chosen stopover causes things to price out higher than the fare you have paid. Again, with these fares any recalculation will almost certainly cause a significant increase in price.
In order to determine what your options are you need to look at the specific fare rules for the ticket you purchased.
Thanks Xyzzy, this is a good description - gets me a little closer to understanding HIP. Something like this needs to be added to the FT glossary
higher intermediate point. When a city between the city of origin and the fare break point has a higher fare than the destination city, the higher fare must be used.
