Sod them (scuse my french) - tell them you like to dress up like the pilot so you feel that you are in control - otherwise you get all frantic and freaked out

Add a little wings badge to a shirt or jacket lapel and maybe a brimmed hat for good measure.
If you want/need/can wear this then go ahead. I would find that a lot less of an issue than the masks that you see all the time in Asia (smog/pandemics/etc) - they basically say they don't feel comfortable sharing my air space - yours is for completely a different reason.
Also it would give me something good to freak my kids out if they were also along for the ride - maybe take their mind off the snorer in the row in front!
