Two suggestions:
1) Use the "Via" option (next to POS) to force a connection thru a certain airport (like YVR)
2) Search individual legs with non-stop flights instead of relying on the connections that the tool (NH's engine in this case) will show. For example, don't look for HKG-SFO unless you are specifically looking for the SQ or UA direct flights. If you are looking for the AC flight, put in HKG-YVR.
