I've mostly noticed it at small outstations, although some hubs have special areas/lines for Silvers--for example, at MSP, FO has a special check in line and then (this isn't publicized) they can go to the opposite end of the airport and use the all-airline elite security line (but not the DL SP security line unless they are eligible for PreCheck, although I don't know how they would prove this to the DL staff member serving as SP line dragon, who does check eligibility for the SP area).
I've been flying AA a fair bit lately (due to DL fare gouging from GPT ever since AirTran left us) to/from MSP, and I've never had to prove anything to the DL staff member serving as the SP/TSA-Pre line dragon...I just tell him/her verbally that I have TSA-Pre and I go right through. I'm also told by the TSOs there that when they scan the BP, the TSA-Pre info is embedded in the bar code - if the scanner doesn't reply back that a flyer is qualified, he/she gets bounced to the regular TSA line.
