Ethical methods:

T24 (check in at exactly 24 hours before your flight. $0)
EBCI (Early Bird check in, $10 per flight)
Business select, Lots of $$$ sometimes versus WGA (Want to Get Away) fares
Fly 25 flights in a calendar year and make A-list. Many, many $$$ if you do not need to go that many places.
If you are COS (Customer of Size) buy two seats and preboard.

Unethical methods:

Have someone roll you to the gate in a wheelchair and get a blue sleeve to preboard.
Break line. Slipping in behind BS and in front of A-list seems to be the most common ploy.

Serendipitous methods:

Snag an A-list position from a cancellation of an A-list passenger that opens up just before you check in.
Find a flight with fewer A-list passengers.
