I've left carry-ons with laptops and cameras with them loads of times. Admittedly the laptops were quite beaten up from road use. Never had a problem.

N.b. while I did wrap a jumper around my camera, this was for physical protection from knocks, ALL bags are xrayed when going in, so the staff will know what you have in there, but as I said, never had a problem with security.
