should spring for a cheap but decent hotel in the old city. although i have not seen the hilton or the ihg, from their location, and the photos of them you will feel at home. there is little difference between the hotels there, and the same chains in japan.
RE:currency. it is more stable than it was when i visited. when i visited, the little hotel provided up to $200us each day at the new daily rate. asked how people could determine value so quickly(lots of zeros on the paper). they said by the color.
