Don't know how many bags he wants to schlock up there, by himself, however?
But it would certainly free up his wife's connection time quite a bit!^
Be very careful here. If the bag is checked under the wife's name, but then husband takes it and drops off on carrousel, they will take the bag off the plane when she no shows. If OP is to do this, he should have all bags checked under his name.
