There are no one-ways with Aeroplan.

Isn't AC a *A member? One should be able to book a one-way on United or some other airline. Or, for that matter do a round-trip YUL to JFK or ORD (someone mentioned YUL above) and then a separate award ticket from the US City, using Aeroplan miles.
A mild annoyance, but at least one gets to avoid giving AC $400+ in fees
