He'd be constrained by the overwater carrier's rules, according to IATA.

OP: on the outbound you can check up to the full *G for no charge. On the return, you will at the least be allowed to check as much as is allowed for a non-frequent flyer on United. Theoretically, you should be allowed your full *G privileges but this may take a lot of fighting to accomplish.
