A great perspective Paralytic ^, the clouds are Cumulus in form but I can't tell what height this is at...so it could be Cumulus if the bases are below 6500 feet above ground level (AGL) or Altocumulus if the bases are above 6000 feet AGL...My favourite flight level (ascending or descending through cloud deck)

Is it the same type of hooked tail cirrus again BotB?
Several hours later we had some big thunderstorms.....were they a sign of what was to come?

A great photo for another reason...This is Cirrus formed from a contrail (condensation trail from a airplane passing overhead) Wikipedia description of Contrails...what is unique is that the upper level winds are blowing in one direction which has caused striation (imagine pulling cotton apart) of the contrail only in one direction which makes it look like thin long hooks...with such a sharp transition from the cloud and the background sky on the right hand side of the Cirrus. ^

In itself the Cirrus here is not an indicator of any poor weather approaching, however, the wind shear may have contributed to the thunderstorms you had that day. Likely the thunderstorms were a result of a large amount of 'lift' potential in the atmosphere, a good amount of moisture in the air and the ability of the Sun to heat the Earth causing the convective conditions which brought the thunderstorms...but they could have been formed otherwise as well...(always have to have a get out clause in any weather explanation )

Great photos everyone! ^
