I'm flying IAD-PTY-SXM next Thursday, which involves a 19 hour (overnight) layover in Panama City. We've rented a car, getting a hotel, etc. I was wondering if anyone knew if we'd collect our luggage in PTY then recheck the next morning, or since its a connecting flight, if they would keep our luggage and we should pack clothes in our carryon instead.

Thanks!
I have overnight often in PTY. I strongly suggest you pack what you need in a carry-on and check your bags all the way to SXM. It is so much easier. PTY is a zoo in the mornings as it is Copa hub. Looks just like a Continental hub. Check in lines are LONG if your not elite. The check in area looks identical to CO terminal E check in at IAH. Copa whole set up there is copy of CO IAH Terminal E ops. Take out CO and replace it with Copa.

If you don't speak Spanish it can be difficult. Easiest thing to do. Check bags all the way at IAD, get all your boarding passes at IAD. That way in the morning in PTY all you have to do is go through immigration and security and not deal with check-in. Also the traffic in PTY can be bad in the morning. Make sure you have plenty of time.
