You may or may not have routing options. Go to aa.com, and do a test award booking LAX-MBJ-LAX for your desired dates. You will only be looking for "MileSAAver" awards, as those are the only award seats that can be booked with Avios. (Ignore AA's pricing for the trip; when you redeem Avios for travel on AA, BA's redemption rates apply, not AA's.)

You can try doing the same thing at ba.com, but you would have to log in to your BAEC account to do so, and ba.com is not always good about showing AA award availability, especially when a connection is required.

Of course, availability you find today may bear little resemblance to the availability you will find after you and your wife have accumulated the necessary Avios to book the award flights.
