The system will put you in your original fare class, I'm not sure if it automatically puts you on the wait list for J, but I know that you can ask to be put on the wait list at the airport.

I have had some luck in the past asking the check in agents to see if the system will allow them to move me to an earlier flight, confirmed in J, by paying the same day change fee. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I think the ~$80 fee is worth it to bypass the wait list on flights that look like they will be full and where I might get trumped by people with higher status.
