Amadeus will allow new ticket numbers to be issued while maintaining the PNR. I don't see why a new ticket number would force the cancellation of the first segment.

If that were the case, it would be a policy matter - and that might be a breach of the contract in operation, and a gross display of bad-faith, to my mind.
