I actually prefer different confirmation numbers. My first one gets me to my destination city and is promptly forgotten, filed away in reimbursement purgatory. The next flight is a new itinerary and a new number, infinitely changeable and flexible without thought of the outbound.

When my points post, they post as separate flights because they are separate flights. The TTF's are separate as well making them easier to manage. I used to think as you do and thought the folks here were silly and doing too much work. As I began to try it and use it, the utility became more apparent. It is the only way I book now. One round trip gets four PRN's. Two for me and two for my XS companion.

I also used to have a corporate travel planner that was only successful in messing up something royally about nearly every trip. If not the air, it was the hotel. Or maybe it was the rental car. They would find a great deal that was in a fleabag dump or the car would be off site....way off site and no shuttle. No one plans my travel except me.
