andrewwm is offering great advice for you.
You will want to be able to stay awake as late as possible when you arrive in Tokyo. If you can sleep a bit on the way over (not 6 - 8 hours!) you will be rested enough to function on arrival.
That way you can get something to eat and wander around a bit. Hopefully go to bed later in the evening and get at least 5 or 6 hours of sleep for the next day. You will find that getting on schedule as soon as you can is the secret to beating jet lag.
Also make sure you stay hydrated during the flight and don't drink a lot of alcohol. Jet lag and a hangover is not a nice experience.
