Everyone has their own strategy for beating jet lag, but if you haven't done it very often, I think most would recommend that you at least try to get a few hours sleep on the plane.

What you want to do is to try and get your body synched up to local time as quickly as possible. If you land at NRT and get to the hotel at 7 pm, with no sleep on the plane, it will be very hard not to just pass out right there. Once you get into the 7pm fall asleep, 4 am wakeup cycle, it is very hard to get out of.

Much better to get a few hours of sleep on the plane, which makes it much easier to tough it out until 10 or 11 pm local time.
