The terminal you saw is the new and refreshed one. I flew some of the early services before and then during renovation, and it was a huge nod to retro-70s!
Isn't the terminal exactly the same terminal just spruced up? That is what I thought had happened. The old interior wasnt so much a nod to the 70s as a relic from them and oddly fun as a result.
Those who claim that there is little difference in the time spent flying from LHR or LCY fundamentally miss the point of the service IMHO It is less about total elapsed time than it is about a civilised end to end journey experience. I would spend longer to take CWLCY flights because the immigration process is pleasant, connections including connecting baggage are a breeze (you can properly through check bags and see them again only on a computer screen in SNN or on arrival at your final destination). No service from LHR allows that.
You can arrive at LCY 15 minutes before your flight, you can also work and email colleagues throughout your flight. The onboard service is much better than Normal CW, the seat is also MUCH better than normal CW IMHO.
If all this wasnt enough you also get 33% more miles and TPs. What isnt there to love about this service?
I honestly would not consider any other way to get to JFK even if I had guaranteed free upgrades to F from LHR
