You can renew your Ambassador membership 60 days before only expiry - it used to be 90 days a few years back. Once Ambassador membership is renewed with either points or cash, allow IHG to process the renewal before sending in the RA referral certificate.
If you send in the May certificate, they will only grant RA status until October 31st. If during that time he doesn't requalify on a prorated basis, he will receive a free year of Ambassador membership (downgrade letter). This exact situation happened to a friend of mine in February.
