Yeah, that is a bit hard to understand. If you live in a US hub, they're probably your best choice (at least for biz travel -- I find US to be particularly skillful in charging high prices for their leisure nonstops). And, in a way, you currently get the best of both worlds with US: easy upgrades, because there's not much elite competition AND excellent Star alliance award availability at low rates. I guess because US's own coach award availability is poor -- the only thing you can see online -- people don't realize the value.

Hey, it's easy to complain but -- at the end of the integration day -- there's nothing wrong with Mileage Plus. Except that there are a freakin' large number of elites, which is obviously bad for upgrades if you're low on the elite food chain. Otherwise, it's a very good program. Quite competitive with AA.
