I agree--it is better that my spouse clears first both because of her lower status *and* for marital happiness.
That being said, what this has taught me is that my status actually matters very little when it comes down to it on the new UA. My status isn't the most significant tie-breaker against many other upgraders--I am the same or worse than anyone else using a SWU, and anyone using miles from a GS or 1K account. Instead, my loyalty is ignored by rewarding someone else for booking or checking-in sooner.

That's not quite what I posted. I said everyone using a SWU/GPU must by default carry the status of a GS or 1K onto the waitlist. You are correct in that other folks can also be on the waitlist using miles & copay; presumably they would also carry the status of the mileage account from which those miles came? In that case, anyone using a GS or 1K miles is also carrying that same status onto the waitlist.
Which brings me to another question? As a 1K, if my child (a GM) or spouse (Premier Gold) were to sponsor my upgrade with miles from other of their accounts, which status would apply to my upgrade? My 1K status (as the flyer) or the lower status of the mileage account holder?
