If you want to be upgraded ahead of your wife, and tell her sorry that she is in Y if F is full, then request the upgrade for yourself first before your companion.
Although, I think in the long run, specific to the OP's case, it's better that his wife clears first...My policy on multiple travelers has always been to get the non-status people cleared first. Granted, nothing is certain in this new airline's CF of upgrading, but if it comes down to a day-of thing, better the 1K is fighting for an upgrade than the non-status spouse.
