If Z is available then you can use miles or SWU(s) without having to play the "waitlist game".

As mentioned before, no need to transfer the miles - they can be linked and pulled from your account. And, if on the same flights (some agents enforce the same PNR requirement), you can use the SWU for a traveling companion.
