The weather might be playing a part (I haven't checked recently) - some of the faster ferries need relative calm to travel.
There are no longer any fast ferries on any of the North Sea routes - the HSS stopped running about five years ago (it could be more)
If we're talking about this coming week-end it could be a combination of the UK Bank Holiday week-end, and people returning to the Continent after their May Day holiday week. A lot of my Continental friends are travelling this week, and I've noticed lots of foreign cars driving around East Anglia.
