We always travel with boxes exclusively to/fm Japan. Means return trip is always only carry on. In Japan space comes at a premium and I really have no room to store 6 pieces of luggage, besides the card box weighs less than a piece of luggage. If I recall there is a difference with the liability. If something is damaged or breaks, UA will not cover it, at least that's how I understood it.
