I'd be renting a car either way, so that would be a wash. Costs via URT would be ~$20 each way for ferry, plus extra gas URT-ferry port. Costs via USM would be ~$500 for direct flight, plus the stress having 2 tickets - an award ticket connecting with a paid ticket in BKK.
