Same thing happened to me. After getting approved for 2 Citi AAdvantage cards, I bought two e-gift cards to trigger the statement credits. The credit for the Visa card posted and then a few weeks later, I saw that both purchases had been refunded before I was able to retrieve the gift cards. Debating whether to buy another gift card with the Amex to try to trigger the statement credit.
