As an example I want to fly to LCY on 8 May on 7-45 BA 8705 and return from LHR on BA 1452 AT 15-50.
If you search on "Plan your flight" and click economy and lowest price BA 8705does not show up at all as being available. Therefore website cannot give you a return cost.
If you click on flexible conditions it comes up (at present) with fare of £256 one way. The return on BA 1452 comes up at £273-a total fare of £529. Speaking on the phone to BA silver card line this return flight is actually available for a return of £333.50 (C class out bound and L class in bound) but there is no way of seeing that on the website. So almost £200 a difference. The BA agent replicated what I tried to do on website and got the same result. Inconsistent with the fares they see. The agent agreed that actually you should always see lowest fare availalble for each flight if searching for lowest price, irrespective of class.
Exactly the same happens when I looked at other flights.
Likely to mean people not booking BA as either they think no flights available or cost uneconomic.
Expertflyer shows BA8705 on 8th May as:
J9 C9 D0 I0 Y9 B0 H0 K0 M0 G0
So, quite limited availability and only in flexible Y (economy). This might be why ba.com does not display any results for lowest fare, economy, as you state.
Btw, it would have helped if you had mentioned EDI in your post.
