I know the EXP desk can merge PNRs - admittedly reluctantly - if the routing and fare class is the EXACT same.

But, one thing my colleague and I don't know - can they only merge if the PNRs were bought together but later split for upgrade purpose? Or can you merge two PNRs that were bought separately.

Any stories of recent experience in this matter would be helpful.
